Palm Coast - Have a daughter or son with big dreams of being a mermaid? There is now a local opportunity for them to get that chance.
Palm Coast's Parks & Recreation will offer its first-ever mermaid class for children ages 6-11. The classes will be taught by Cassie Courchesne, a City of Palm Coast Swim Instructor and Lifeguard who teaches swim classes and some specialty aquatics classes.
"I wanted to start the mermaid class to make the dreams of little boys and girls come true all over Palm Coast," said Courchesne. "Putting on this tail and swimming gracefully through the water allows you to enter a world of fun imagination and that is so important for children to have."
Participants must provide their own tail and will learn proper swimming techniques, fluke splashes and how to correctly care for a mermaid tail.
To qualify for the class, children need to know how to swim as they will have to pass several prerequisites such as swim 50 yards without assistance, float on front and back without assistance, roll from back to front and be comfortable in deep water. Prerequisites will be tested on May 25 at noon.
This class will be held during two summer sessions. Session 1 will be held June 1-29 and session 2 will be held July 6-27. The classes will be held on Saturdays from 4:15-5:15 p.m. at the Palm Coast Aquatics Center. The cost is $25 per session.
If interested in participating, please register at www.parksandrec.fun/aquatics as soon as possible as there is a limited number of spots available.
