Under Chief Forte’s leadership, the Palm Coast Fire Department has taken the initiative to change the mental health culture of the fire service. In September of 2018, Chief Forte appointed Driver/Engineer Chris Cottle as Chaplain. Chaplain Cottle is working on improving the E.A.P. (Employee Assistance Program) experience, as well as working with insurance providers and holistic services to improve the mental health of the PCFD. He is available to talk with PCFD personnel if needed in regard to traumatic service calls and personal matters. First responder suicides have outnumbered L.O.D.D. (Line of Duty Death). 46% of firefighter have thoughts of suicide and 14-15% of firefighters suffer from depression versus 6% of the general population. Through the current programs as well as developing program we intend to change the mental health in our fire department.
