Car Seat Installation / Checks
Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of children 1 to 12 years old in the United States, and the best way to protect them in the car is to put them in the right seat, at the right time, and use it the right way, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The Fire Department has had a Car Seat Program for the past five years, and people are able to come to any Palm Coast fire station daily to have their car seats checked," said Firefighter/EMT Christopher Cottle, who manages the City's program. "But we also want to offer a special event a couple times a year to draw attention to the importance of car seat safety checks."
Fire Department personnel who have been trained as car seat technicians will check to make sure car seats are installed properly and to the manufacturer and vehicle specifications. They will be able to instruct the parent/guardian on how to properly install the seat. City employees will not actually install the seats, but they will show the owners the proper steps.
People who attend the event, or stop by any station daily, are asked to bring their car seat manual and the vehicles owner's manual with them.
