The year was 1973, when local residents of Palm Coast decided to have a fire department of their own. With the donation of a fire engine by the ITT Corporation and the use of a maintenance shed at the local golf course, the Volunteer Fire Department at Palm Coast was formed. Responding to the request, some 36 original members started what has become a combination department.
Operating out of five fire stations our current membership includes 57 career employees and 50 volunteers, including Fire Police and Associate members. Our members have responded to not only fire related calls, but emergency medical calls, and emergency management situations. Today, the department handles approximately 20-25 calls per day. Career members work 24 hour shifts, with 48 hours off. Our volunteers respond as needed 24 hours per day.
