Palm Coast - The fourth annual Birds of a Feather Fest is this Friday through Sunday - offering a weekend of birding, workshops, "backyard" fun, birds of prey shows, and the City of Palm Coast's first Rooted in Nature lecture by acclaimed wildlife photographer Moose Peterson.
Many activities, including the lecture by Peterson and PeaCee's Big Backyard adventure on Saturday, are free. A full schedule is at www.birdingfest.com.
The Birds of a Feather Fest is based at Palm Coast City Hall, 160 Lake Ave., Palm Coast. Space is still available for many birding field trips, big trips and workshops on all three days. Sign up today at www.birdingfest.com. Reservations are not needed for PeaCee's Big Backyard or the Peterson lecture on Saturday.
PeaCee's Big Backyard
With something for all ages, PeaCee's Big Backyard will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday behind City Hall. The yard will show people how to set up their own backyards to attract birds and butterflies. Members of the Garden Club at Palm Coast will be on-hand to offer advice and answer questions.
The Audubon Center for Birds of Prey will have birds of prey under a huge tent, with shows at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
There will be crafts including pine cone bird feeders, fishing line storage containers and paint-your-own rocks. The backyard will have games and an oversized eagle's nest to play in. Several nature- and conservation-related exhibits and booths will be located along the sidewalks behind City Hall. The Flagler Audubon Society will be giving away free 1-gallon native plants.
Guided beginner bird walks for all ages will begin at 8 and 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. This is an easy walk; wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars if you have them.
An Evening with Moose Peterson
At 7 p.m. Saturday, Peterson will share images and stories from his 40 years as a wildlife photographer. The Rooted in Nature Lecture will be at the Flagler Auditorium, 5500 State Road 100, Palm Coast (on the campus of Flagler Palm Coast High School). Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
While tickets are not required for the free lecture, space can be reserved in advance through the registration site. A limited number of tickets are also available for a pre-event reception with Peterson. Sign up at www.birdingfest.com.
As part of the Birds of a Feather Fest, Peterson will lead a Sunrise Photography Field Trip to Orlando Wetlands Park - an exclusive event open to only 10 participants.
