Palm Coast - On Saturday, April 22, firefighters and police will face off for a good cause in the 19th annual Guns N' Hoses Charity Boxing Tournament - and Palm Coast Fire Lt. Dan Driscoll will be among the amateur boxers participating.

This will be the first boxing event for Driscoll, 32, who's been a Palm Coast firefighter for eight years and was promoted to lieutenant last year. He signed up for the charity tournament after some of his friends have participated in the past. Driscoll has been training for about a year, with both a private coach locally and also at the tournament's training camp.

The matchups are based on weight and skill. Driscoll's match will be the ninth fight out of 15 at the tournament, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville. The event is open to the public, with more information and tickets available at www.gunsnhosesJax.com.

"The IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) and the Fraternal Order of Police have been doing this charity tournament for years, and it's all for a good cause," Driscoll said. "All proceeds go to Muscular Dystrophy, which is IAFF's charity, and the FOP Foundation."

Many Palm Coast firefighters plan to attend - to see firefighters and police officers "Fight for a Better Community."

"Training and preparing for the tournament has been a lot of fun," said Driscoll, who is also coordinator of the City of Palm Coast's annual Halloween Hall of Terror. "We've made up a T-shirt with the logo for the Palm Coast Professional Firefighters (IAFF Local 4807), and everyone is excited about it."

Deputy Fire Chief Jerry Forte is among those who will be there Saturday. "Lt. Driscoll is as much of a kind gentleman as he is a professional leader in the fire service. He has been working diligently on his first year as a lieutenant and has much success with the people he works with," Forte said. "We have watched him train for this event and continue to be impressed at his skill level. We wish him luck and we will be there to cheer him on."
