About Palm Coast FiberNET
The Palm Coast FiberNET effort started with requests from Palm Coast businesses who asked for access to the existing City-owned fiber network. This network has been constructed over the past several years to lower the cost of telecommunications for the City and to connect City facilities (e.g. fire stations, water plants, parks, etc.). The goal of the Palm Coast FiberNET project is to help lower the cost of telecommunications for existing businesses in the City, and to help attract new businesses and jobs to Palm Coast.
The City of Palm Coast will not sell broadband services, but will operate the broadband network as a digital road system. As with conventional transportation roadways, the City will build and maintain these new digital roads, but private businesses will use the system to deliver broadband services. This is consistent with the City's view that local government should not compete with the private sector. This approach creates unlimited opportunities for telecommunications services.
Businesses that wish to use the Palm Coast FiberNET network will order services directly from a provider that offers services on the network, and each service provider will directly bill their own customers. The City will not be involved. Fees paid by service providers for use of the network will pay for the cost of operating the network, most importantly, the Palm Coast FiberNET network will be operated in a revenue neutral fashion to avoid any increase in taxes.
